Liechtenstein is another of the places we visited on our drive back home to France after we had visited family in England. We have always fancied visiting Liechtenstein, mainly out of curiosity because it is so small. Liechtenstein is a small independent principality in the Alps, between Switzerland and Austria. The principality was created in 1719 within the Holy Roman Empire, becoming independent of the German confederation in 1866. The whole country is only 160 sq km ~ 62 sq miles with a population of 33,145 and the currency is the Swiss Franc. Liechtenstein is economically integrated with Switzerland. Vaduz is the Capital City, and is where we stopped off for an hour or so. Obviously being such a small country we didn't plan on spending the night there. I think it was a Sunday when we were there so most of the shops etc were closed, but there were a surprising number of tourists walking round which would explain the two coaches in the car park. We wandered round taking photo's, and we bought a couple of postcards to send to family. At the tourist information booth you could get a Liechtenstein stamp in your passport for 1 SF, well it makes a nice souvenir! As most things were closed we had no reason to stay for that long, so after a good stretch of our legs we were back in the car on the road homeward.
