Tautavel
Tautavel is where you will find the Musee de la Prehistoire, (Open Daily: July & August 9am-9pm, April-June & September 10am-7pm, January-March & October-December 10am-12:30pm & 2pm-6pm, € 6.86). Displayed there is the front part of a skull of Homo erectus - an evolutionary midpoint between the African Homo habilis and modern Homo sapiens dating back to half a million years ago, a period from which hardly any other human remains have been found in Europe. It was in 1971 that archeologists were working at the Caune de l'Arago, a cave near to the village of Tautavel, 20km northeast of Perpignan on the edge of the Fenouilledes discovered the skull. The skull has an enormous cranial ridge and low eye sockets and is the centre-piece of the small exhibition which also includes animal bones, and stone tools. The cave itself (Open Daily July & August 10am-noon & 12:30pm-5:30pm, you can arrange off season visits via the museum), is situated in a low hill on the opposite side of the Verdouble Valley. There were approximately 250,000 objects found at the cave all of which have been removed, but it is still worth a visit just to stand where primordial hunters lived half a million years ago. The museum does get busy especially with large groups of school children so expect to spend some time there. The village itself has a couple of places to eat and drink.
