Perpignan
Perpignan is the busy, thriving capital of Roussillon. The most multinational city in the Southwest with a strong Spanish/Catalan feel due to it's proximity to the Spanish border. A large number of it's population descend from Spanish Catalans who flooded across the border at the end of the Spanish Civil War. There are also Romany, Moroccan and Algerian communities here. In the thirteenth century Perpignan began to boom as a cloth making centre. Jaume II of Mallorca and Roussillon added to the areas prosperity in 1276, when he made the town his alternative mainland capital; Montpellier being the other one and Palma de Mallorca the king's principal residence. Perpignan's elevated status came to an end in 1344 absorbed by the Catalan-Aragonese Crown, whose own main capital was Barcelona. The following centuries saw the repeated campaigns of conquest of France and it finally became French territory with the 1649 Treaty of the Pyrenees.
